When to go to Mongolia

Mongolia is a land of extremes, freezing cold during the long winters and hot in summer. The best time to go to Mongolia is from May to September, when the grasslands are green and the cold of the winter months is briefly forgotten.

January

Extremely cold and not a good time to visit unless you are particularly hardy. This is the middle of winter with sub-zero temperatures.

February

Extremely cold and not a good time to visit unless you are particularly hardy. This is the middle of winter with sub-zero temperatures.

March

Extremely cold and not a good time to visit. Unpredictable weather with snowstorms possible and a high wind-chill factor. March and April are the toughest months for the local nomadic families.

April

Extremely cold and not a good time to visit. Unpredictable weather with snowstorms possible and a high wind-chill factor. March and April are the toughest months for the local nomadic families.

May

Early in the month will still be very cold however later in the month it will be much more pleasant and a better time to go. The days will be warmer although the evenings will be cool, especially in the northern areas. Make sure you take some warm clothing.

June

Best time to go. Blue skies, sunny days, cool evenings. You may find some ‘mini Nadaam’ warm up events as you travel across the country. Take some warm clothing.

July

Best time to go. Book early for July as the Naadam Festival takes place this month and it will be busier. (Naadam is a hugely important national festival of archery, wrestling and horse racing that is centred in the capital but there are also ‘mini Naadams’ throughout the country). There may be rain at this time though July and August are the warmest months and it can be extremely hot in the Gobi desert area. Take some warm clothing for the evenings.

August

Best time to go. One of the warmest months so you can expect warm, sunny days and cooler evenings. There may be occasional rain which at times may make travel on the dirt roads slightly slower, but it also fills the rivers making them picturesque and the grasslands become a verdant green.

September

Best time to go; it is starting to get cooler, especially at night in more northern areas. Take some warm clothing. Towards the end of the month it will be getting rather cold.

October

October is getting cooler again and you can get some snow in the north however it is still possible to travel, especially in the southern Gobi region. The weather can be unpredictable this time of year and you will find yourselves in either t-shirts or heavy coats and boots!

November

Extremely cold and not a good time to visit unless you are particularly hardy. The start of the Mongolian winter.

December

Extremely cold and not a good time to visit unless you are particularly hardy – this is the middle of winter with sub-zero temperatures.
