Indonesia & Bali

Indonesia & Bali family holidays

Stretching over 5,000 kilometres from Sumatra to New Guinea, our Indonesia and Bali family holidays offer some of the most stunningly diverse landscapes and cultures on the planet. Almost Asia in microcosm, think lush green rice terraces, smoking volcanoes, idyllic, palm-fringed beaches, picture-postcard temples, tea plantations, and wildlife-rich jungles.

Despite Indonesia being the largest archipelago in the world, with over 17,000 islands to choose from, most families opt for a select few. But, oh! What a selection they are! By far the most popular option is a Bali family holiday, where you and your family can experience a tropical paradise made real. Komodo Island (known for its ‘dragons’, the largest lizard on earth), is also a huge hit, offering a completely different experience to Bali and making it a great add-on!

Elsewhere, nearby Lombok is also a gem, with steaming volcanoes, beautiful beaches, and a lush interior. Java, the most populous island offers culture and history including the world’s largest Buddhist temple, Borobudur, Sumatra offers jungle and adventure, and Kalimantan offers orang-utans in the wild. How to choose? Our Places to visit guide may help.

Why take the kids?

Some of our favourite activities on Indonesia and Bali family holidays include:

  1. Rafting, cycling, snorkelling and hiking amidst beautiful scenery
  2. Whipping up local delicacies in a cookery class
  3. Enjoying sunrise on the crater rim of a live volcano
  4. Seeing how batik is made and trying it out for yourselves
  5. Discovering a colourful underwater world on a snorkelling trip in Bali Barat National Park
  6. Eating out of a banana leaf alongside the locals at a night market
  7. Getting up close to monkeys, elephants, birds of paradise and even Komodo Dragons
  8. Watching your kids exploring the incredible temples at Borobudur on Java

It may be halfway around the world but Bali is so compact that travel distances once you arrive are short. This means you can limit yourselves to just a few different bases. You can then enjoy day trips without constantly un-packing and re-packing.

A guided cannyoning excursion is great fun for active families

There are also more than enough activities to keep children of all ages happy. Would-be explorers will get an adrenaline rush from a sunrise climb of Mount Batur (a live volcano). Older children will enjoy a white water rafting trip on the Ayung River and cycling through the paddy fields. Younger children will love the tropical Bird Park and Monkey Forest. See our Bali with kids blog for more ideas and photos.

The local cuisine is also an absolute highlight. The kids will have a ball exploring the night markets and sampling different dishes at the local stalls. Just watch the ‘sambal’ (chili sauce)…

It also goes without saying that families of all ages will love the pretty, palm-fringed beaches. Snorkel over the coral from remote islands or take a dolphin cruise. Learn to surf or paddle-board in the warm Indian Ocean waters or build a sandcastle, decorated with colourful, exotic seashells.
