Wow. Just wow. When we decided to re-run our ‘Young Photographer Award’ for 2018, we put up our hands and admit we were concerned, concerned that the standard may not be as high as last year’s knockout and concerned, too, that there might be less enthusiasm – and submissions – overall.

How completely BRILLIANT it is to have been proven SO WRONG!

As the following ‘around the world in 16 images’ go to show, your children are one talented bunch, demonstrating not only that they can master subject and composition but can capture at-a-glance just how special the world we live and travel in really is.

Without further ado, we are delighted to announce the winners in our Stubborn Mule Travel Young Photographer Awards, as judged by Liddy Pleasants (Stubborn Mule founder), Arthur Ridout (overall winner of the 2017 inaugural Stubborn Mule Young Photographers competition) and John Warburton-Lee (photography professional and AWL Images library owner).

Each category winner in both age groups receives £50, whilst the ultimate winner receives £150. We’ll also be sending some chocolate to the eight runner-ups.

Best Cultural Photo

A broad topic, but one you ran with, submitting as you did everything from images of ruins, temples and architecture to portraits of local people to weird and wonderful culinary offerings from hawkers’ stalls. These, though, were chosen as the stand out winners. Unusually, given the colourful costumes of Peruvian dancers, the under 11 winner chose black and white as the medium, something which made the juxtaposition of dancer and shadow especially pronounced, whilst it was the ‘birds eye view’ of the Under 18’s winner which delivered big. Huge well done to both of you!

Winner – 11 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - culture

Emmett Barkoff, aged 9, Peru

Judges’ comments:
“It must have taken some determination to get into such a good position to take this shot, which captures the energy of these Peruvian dancers.”
John Warburton-Lee

“The choice of black and white was perfect here, the lines of dancers with their shadows contrasting against the black and white road crossing was really well framed.”
Arthur Ridout

Winner – 18 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - culture

Harrison Gilder, aged 16. Thailand

Judges’ comments:
“A standout image, nicely composed and pin sharp. Lovely colour contrast between the water and the baskets in the boat.”
John Warburton-Lee

“This picture really captures the essence of Thailand. The bowl of chillies in the back of the boat, the vibrant colours and the theme all really come together to create a fantastic shot.”
Liddy Pleasants

Runner up – 11 and under

Young Photographers awards 2018 - Culture - crushing chillies

Matilda Boxall, aged 10. Crushing chillies, Sri Lanka

Judges’ comments:
An interesting viewpoint, honing right in onto the hands as the chilies are crushed. A well executed shot.”
John Warburton Lee

I love this picture. It shows great maturity for a 10 year old to focus in on a small detail like this. I can almost smell the curry cooking!
Liddy Pleasants

Runner up – 18 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - Kenya

Elsie Brett, aged 15, Masai Mara, Kenya

Judge’s comment:
“The colours are very striking in this picture and I love the contrast of the bright red clothes worn by the Masai, against the muted colours of the landscape. It’s a beautiful shot.”
Liddy Pleasants

Best Natural World Photo

Again, a broad topic, including as it could, landscapes (mountains, beaches, sea-scapes, deserts, jungles) and animals, the latter a perennially popular subject choice for children and teens. Like last year, we were blown away by the quality and number of submissions in this category, by far the most popular of the four subjects and where competition was most fierce. An extra ‘well-done’, then, to our deserving winners and runners-up.

Winner – 11 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - elephants in Sri Lanka

Matilda Boxall, aged 10. Elephants in Sri Lanka

Judges’ comments:
An unusual, creative viewpoint which captures a baby elephant framed by its mother.
John Warburton Lee

The framing of this picture is perfect. I also love how the photographer has captured the wrinkles on the mother elephant.
Liddy Pleasants

Winner – 18 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - green lizard Sri Lanka

Sasha Kay, aged 17. Chameleon, Sri Lanka

Judges’ comments:
” I really loved the bright vivid greens of the chameleon and leaves, and sharpness of the its head showing all the detail.”
Arthur Ridout

“Good use of depth of field to focus on the chameleon’s eyes and a nice play on colour to show camouflage.”
John Warburton-Lee

Runner up – 11 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - mountain sunset

Freddie May, aged 10. Moody mountains, Borneo

Judge’s comment:
“Photos of the landscape have to work doubly hard to get noticed among all the wildlife images, but the vividness of this sunset in Borneo caught my eye and brought back some special memories of my own travels.”
Liddy Pleasants

Runner up – 18 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - elephant eats lunch

Bo Cresser, aged 13. An elephant’s lunch, Sri Lanka

Judge’s comment:
“I love the movement in this image, how the photographer has captured a single instant. It’s lovely to see a more unusual take on an elephant photo. One of my favourites.”
Liddy Pleasants

Young photographer awards 2018 - underwater

Lucy Youatt, aged 11. Sri Lanka

“This picture is fun! Good selfies are hard enough to take out of the water, let alone within it. The photo captures the essence of what a family holiday should be all about….(hopefully) sibling bonding and good family fun.”

I love the way this photo captures the boy’s anticipation, just before the moment of action.
Liddy Pleasants

Best quirky photo

A new category for this year and a popular one, despite its rather open-ended brief. Thanks to everyone whose entries made us smile, laugh or, like the winning pic in the 18 and under category, scratch our heads wondering just how they’d managed it.

Winner – 11 and under

Young photograph awards 2018 - Sri Lanka train

Haydn D’Adda, aged 9. Faces on a train, Sri Lanka

Judges’ comments:
A nicely observed and well-framed photo, with the red of the carriage framing the window, which in turn gives us a view into the world of the passengers
John Warburton Lee

The colour works really well in this picture with the red of the train carriage. I love how the passengers are interacting with the photographer.
Liddy Pleasants

Winner – 18 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - temple

Alina Bartolini, aged 13. Having fun exploring the temples, Burma/Myanmar

Judge’s comment:
I’m so impressed that this photographer has managed to get the entire group to move into three different positions, all doing the ‘right’ pose, within the time that it takes to do a panoramic photo. Great control of the subject matter!
Liddy Pleasants

Runner up – 11 and under

Young photographer awards 2018 - fish

Rory Gray, aged 11. Hamish returns fish to the sea at Nilaveli, Sri Lanka

Judge’s comment:
I like the contrast of colours in this picture. Also, I love how the fish seems to be looking straight at you, its mouth in a big ‘O’.
Liddy Pleasants

Runner up – 18 and under

Young Photographers Award 2018 - elephant

Ruby Boxall, aged 13. Sri Lanka

Judge’s comment:
“Another image that captures the moment of action well. Elephants have been a popular subject this year, but this one deserves special mention”
John Warburton-Lee

Best Overall Photo

Drum roll, please!!! As you’ll gather from the above, choosing the best-of-the-best was no mean feat for our judges. That being said, the pin-point accuracy and clarity of the subject matter in this picture, despite it being just a shade different from its surroundings and background, united the judges.

On behalf of Stubborn Mule, we have great pleasure and delight in awarding Sasha Kay, 17, for her outstanding chameleon image. We see a great future for you, Sasha, and do hope your winnings will encourage you to keep up the fabulous work.

Young photographer awards 2018 - green lizard Sri Lanka

Sasha Kay, aged 17. Chameleon, Sri Lanka

Judge’s comment:
“This really is the stand-out image of the competition. The picture is beautifully composed and the focus on the eye really draws you in. This is a brilliant shot. Sasha also contributed a second outstanding shot (see below in ‘highly commended’) and clearly has a great future ahead of her as a photographer. Congratulations Sasha.”
Liddy Pleasants, MD Stubborn Mule
