Jordan is a firm Stubborn Mule favourite, with its winning combination of starkly beautiful desert scenery, superb ruins, crusader castles and beaches. It’s small, so you can tick off a lot within a shorter half term break, or extend with extra nights on the Dead Sea or Red Sea for a more relaxing break. As these pictures of Jordan will show, you can be taking a jeep ride in Wadi Rum one day, slathering mud over yourselves the next, and hiking the back route into Petra before the week is out.

The ruins at Petra are vast and can be tiring to explore entirely on foot, so mix things up with a donkey ride too. This can be included any on of our Jordan itineraries.

One of our favourite activities for older children is to hike the little-known back route into Petra – there are caves, viewpoints and stunning desert scenery along the way. This is included on our Active Jordan for Teens itinerary.

The sunny beaches of the Red Sea coast offer great snorkelling opportunities. This area is included in both our example Jordan itineraries
Dana Nature Reserve is one of the scenic jewels in Jordan’s crown, an area of craggy peaks, dramatic valleys and generally gorgeous views. On our Active Jordan itinerary, we can include either easier or more challenging hikes.
Hiking in Jordan is made all the more family-friendly by a stop en route for a glass of freshly brewed Bedouin tea, with flatbreads cooked over the open fire. This can be included on any of our Jordan family holidays.
Teenage skin can be greatly improved with a serious slathering of black gloopy mud from the Dead Sea. Wash it off with a float in the buoyant waters of the sea on any of our Jordan itineraries.
