Family holidays in Brazil

A country of almost bewildering diversity, Brazil is a captivating destination for a family holiday. As the largest country in Latin America, it encompasses everything from sun-drenched beaches to teeming jungles. There are picture-perfect colonial towns, remote wildlife-filled wetlands and buzzing cities. With so much to see, and such a variety of activity and adventure, it’s no wonder that Brazil entices visitors back time and again.

Most families will start off in Rio, without doubt one of the world’s most alluring cities. Within a few hours of arrival you can be strolling along the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, looking up at the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. Cafes and bars hum to a samba soundtrack and around every corner you find kids kicking a football, hoping to be the next Pele.

Iguazo by boat - family holidays in Brazil

Expect to get a little wet on a boat trip to the base of the magnificent Iguazu Falls

But there is so much more to Brazil than Rio. Heading south, the Emerald Coast offers gorgeous colonial towns, secret fjords, islands covered in rainforest and more beautiful beaches. Venture inland and you will find the wildlife haven that is the Pantanal wetlands. Here you can take boat trips or ride horses whilst spotting capybaras, anacondas and jaguar. To the south, you can get drenched at the incredible Iguazu Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world.

Further afield there are exciting journeys along the Amazon from Manaus (perhaps sleeping on a river cruise boat). Or you can head to the northeast coast and explore the intriguing delights of Salvador de Bahia with its colourful culture and tropical beaches.

It’s a huge country and it can be difficult to know where to start. However, you can be sure that a family holiday in Brazil will be a holiday like no other!

Family holidays in Brazil - Horse riding safari in the Pantanal

Kids will love exploring the Pantanal by horseback on family holidays in Brazil

The children will be fascinated by pretty much everything on a family holiday in Brazil. This might be watching the locals play football on Rio’s Ipanema beach or dabbling in a cookery course in the old town of Paraty. It might be fishing for piranhas in the Pantanal or taking a night safari in the Amazon. There is something for everyone and such a variety that children (and adults) of any age will be constantly entertained.

Distances are vast but there is an easy network of domestic flights which connects the different parts of the country. This limits the amount of driving required. Accommodation is lovely, with many beautiful historic family-friendly pousadas (inns). Many of these have pools, tropical gardens and hammocks which make for a relaxing base from which to explore.

With the lively beat of the samba ever present, Brazil is sure to rock its way into the heart of any fun-loving family.
