Most recent holidays:
A family gap year meet-up in Indonesia, two weeks in Belize and Guatemala – genuinely one of our best-ever family holidays. Oman, Kenya, Nepal, Jordan and Crete, all with the family. Brazil with my eldest, Iceland with my two youngest, and Mexico and Croatia with my mother. Montenegro, Malaysia, and Madagascar on my own.

I never pack without including:
Double the number of plug converters that I initially thought we needed. And a sarong.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
It’s properly fun. You get to spend time together in a way that can be difficult to fit in at home. They find humour and interest in the smallest things and my kids constantly surprise me with the ease with which they embrace life in all its wonderful variety.

Also, travelling with children opens doors that would never otherwise have been opened. Locals are so delighted that you have brought your children to their country that you really are welcomed with open arms – we’ve experienced this in so many different countries.

And worst?
Turning up at an amazing restaurant and having to trawl through the menu to find something (….anything!) that my fussy child might consider eating.

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Getting the post-trip feedback and hearing about all the adventures and amazing experiences that our Stubborn Mule families have had.

What else do you like doing on holiday:
Eating! 10 days of curry in Rajasthan was heaven for me. I always make sure to try the local delicacies too – pigeon pastilla in Morocco was quite nice but the sheep’s “bits” in Beijing less so!

I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to adrenaline-fuelled activities and managed to avoid zip-lining in Costa Rica but I have to say, the tubing there was the most fun thing I’ve ever done!

Most recent holidays:
Just back from island hopping in Croatia, which was even more beautiful than I could have imagined. The crystal clear waters, delicious seafood and variety of activities here were a real hit for the whole family.

Prior to this, I went on an incredible safari and beach trip to Botswana and Mauritius which was epic! Flying above the Okavango Delta and looking down on the floodplains below was just amazing and a particularly memorable moment was not being able to land on the airstrip due to elephants blocking the way! The mokoro canoe trips here were incredibly special and then finishing up on the sensational white sand beaches in Mauritius made for a truly incredible end to the trip.

I never pack without including:
Far too many books! I’m a sucker for guidebooks and often buy 2 or even 3 for each destination.

Suitcase or backpack?
I have a really unpractical holdall that I love because it’s orange and because its now been to so many places with me, I can’t bear to leave it behind!

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids? And worst?
The best and worst thing is their enthusiasm for the tiniest things and the strangest thing – “look Amy, isn’t this temple incredible?!” her reply – “Mum when can we go back to the hotel, I love the café/shower/slide there so much?”

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
That no two itineraries are ever exactly the same, it really is 100% designed just for your family.

Recent holidays
We didn’t think we could top our Borneo holiday a few years ago, which was incredible, but my family recently returned from Ecuador and the Galapagos… And WOW! After 25 years in travel, it’s not often you can say, “this is the best thing I’ve done,” but at the end of the trip I made that statement. Lets just say, spending my birthday kayaking on a white-sand beach surrounded by pelicans, blue-footed boobies, turtles, sharks, sea lions and marine iguanas, then checking out the local gelato bars and souvenir shops in the afternoon, was my happy place. I’ve been truly lucky in the last few years to have visited some wonderful places. Laos, Costa Rica, Kenya, Canada, Vietnam, Madeira, the Azores and northern Greece were all brilliant in very different ways. Later this year I’ll be fulfilling a long-standing dream of visiting Kerala, India, so watch this space!

I never pack without including:
High-factor sunscreen and a good hat – redheads and the sun – say no more. Always fully covered in rash vest and leggings if I’m in the water, snorkelling or kayaking. Glamorous? Maybe not, but I can forget worrying about getting burned, and focus on just enjoying whatever I’m doing. One of my biggest travel essentials is my filter drinks bottle. The bonus of having fresh water wherever I am, with no worrying about finding/buying bottled single-use plastic, cannot be overstated. Binoculars. Playing cards. Books.

Suitcase or backpack?
Either or both, depending on the scenario. Suitcase for plenty of room and ease of pulling it along. Plus you can really squish it shut. Backpack for leaving my hands free while walking around. Travelling light is appealing but I am terrible at it, always adding just one more outfit… If the itinerary allows, I’m a big fan of having some laundry done along the way.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Seeing the world through their eyes. Watching them learn to bargain for souvenirs and say hello in another language. Taking them away when they’re little and seeing them realise the wider world is very different to their home. ‘Character-building’ activities. My daughter recently commented, during a high-altitude uphill hike, “next time I’m doing something I think is hard, I’ll think about this.” The sense of achievement afterward was worth it, though, honest! Seeing my teenage son’s face transform upon seeing Galapagos penguins (a long-held wish), and all being in the water together and counting 5 enormous sea turtles around us, are moments I’ll never forget. Creating new family in-jokes and unique memories. Discovering favourite new ice-cream flavours and the best local snacks. Getting competitive over Mario Kart on the Switch in hotel rooms around the world!

And worst?
Difficulties when they are fussy eaters – can we find pizza, or the words to negotiate a plain burger with no salad or sauce?! Worrying about them getting sick (was that burger a bit dodgy?). Moody teens reluctant to engage with guides, and looking at their phone instead of taking in the experience. Micro-managing everyone’s packing. Have the children packed enough / too much? Does my husband really need me to tell him whether he needs his Big Walking Shoes or just his sturdy trainers? Repeatedly having to tell everyone again (and again) what the plan is for tomorrow, what to bring and what time is the pick-up. Just accepting that you won’t see everything you want before the children have had enough and everyone needs a break (and a beer).

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Our down-to-earth approach, flexibility and understanding the realities of travelling with children. Our wonderful team swapping information across the office, sharing laughs and keeping up to date on the best places, hotels and activities for our guests, in phenomenal detail. Problem-solving as a tight-knit team, knowing that everything can somehow be overcome and there is always a way forward in any situation. And of course: reading feedback from our clients after they have travelled. So many trips of a lifetime and happy faces on photos – that’s the best of all.

What I do on my time off
Summit mountains (when I can escape beautiful but rather flat Suffolk). Run. Run around after three kids with their rugby, hockey, football, cricket matches. Sea swimming, SUP, family BBQs on the beach (summer), board games in front the fire (winter), long hikes in Snowdonia or the Lakes followed by a good local pint in the pub.

Suitcase or backpack?
A constant source of amusement in the office – I am backpack through and through – replete with buff, hiking boots and waterproofs. One simply cannot roll a suitcase along the trails of the Himalayas after all.

Most recent trips?
The Galapagos, Bali and the Komodo Islands, Morocco, Argentina and Belize (all with the kids), and Brazil, Namibia, Colombia and Norway (for ‘work’).

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Talking to adventurous families about exciting adventures in far-off places (theirs and my own), sharing a laugh over email with our wonderful local partners around the world, putting together fabulous new itineraries for fantastic new destinations, working with a brilliant bunch of like-minded mums in deepest, darkest Suffolk (yes, I know that makes us sound like a witches coven) and the minor appeal of heading off on regular recce trips and family holidays to test our trips out.  It’s a hard life….

Best boredom buster for keeping kids happy on a long-haul flight?
I guess I’m not allowed to say sleeping pills or a catapult… after our 17-hour epic to Borneo I can happily advise that it is all manageable, connecting flights are actually quite painless and any flight will inevitably involve electronic devices, colouring pens (non-permanent!) and endless snacks along with the threat of getting some sleep otherwise there will be none of the above!

What is your secret to achieving family harmony on a trip?
Making sure the kids have had their daily fix of swimming (rivers, pool, sea, waterfalls, wherever) and the parents have had their cold beer.

Most recent holidays:
Ecuador, USA and Japan … sorry, they were WORK! And Croatia and Crete with the family.

I never pack without including:
Passports & travel insurance, obviously. Wet wipes, sarong, insect repellent and sunglasses/sun cream… I’m a practical person!

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Best thing is experiencing new and old experiences through the eyes of your child … making memories that they’ll speak of for years to come and will leave a lasting impression on them.

And worst?
The pressure you feel in making sure everything is just right. When it was just yourself (and hubby), you would go anywhere and do anything … now that you have children, you feel this enormous responsibility and double-check everything 100 times… visas, flights, medication, etc.

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
We are experts in arranging holidays for families… holidays that we ourselves do – and would love to take our own families on … tried and tested! And the feedback we get from our clients is just magical – confirmation that we’re doing the right thing.

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
The passion and enthusiasm of everyone who works here. We all know how important family time is – so we have a big onus on getting it right.

Most recent holidays:
In the last couple of years, I’ve been lucky enough to go to Vietnam, USA, Jordan, Antigua, Norway, the Norfolk Broads, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Morocco and Namibia. And recently Turkey, India, Greece, Madeira and Guyana.

I never pack without including:
Teabags and a small flask. So many places don’t do proper tea!!!

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids? 
It is such an incredible privilege to see the world through a child’s eyes. Even things we had done, and seen before we took the children, were so special. We have only travelled once at Christmas but as we bumped along a muddy dirt track in the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia my son looked at me with tears in his eyes and said “This is the best Christmas ever” and there wasn’t a present or bit of tinsel in sight.

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Helping people to plan their amazing trips and hopefully using my experience of travelling with children to help them to have a really special time of their own. There are so many countries out there that I love, and it is wonderful to share that passion with clients and persuade them to try out places and experiences that my family have loved.

Suitcase or backpack?
Either as long as it has wheels.

I never pack without including:
Hair mousse – essential when air drying my curly head in a remote location. And my kindle!

Most recent holidays:
Two adventures with my youngest teenage son – exploring Japan by bullet train and a fantastic recce trip to Thailand. Slovenia with the older teenager, trying out all the extreme activities eek! Discovering the Croatian Dalmatian coastline on a self-drive trip. My favourite family holiday was a road trip in South Africa from Cape Town along the Garden Route, ending with a safari in the Eastern Cape – just brilliant from start to finish.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Being able to say yes a lot more. Spending time away from everyday distractions and not having a schedule to stick to.

The worst?
That they often want to stay up later than me!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Every family is different, and we love using our experience to get each trip just right, no detail is too small.

Extension cable and adapter, laundry sachets/stain remover – I always drop food down me 😂, water bottle – got to do my bit for the planet

My go-to is a soft holdall with wheels that also can be a backpack… best of both!

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Sheer joy when you say yes to whatever they want and the excitement of discovering new places and things to do!

The worst?
Entertainment on long journeys, how many sticker books can I bring!?

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
The knowledge of all my colleagues is mind-blowing and hearing them describe various destinations to families with such detail and ease is amazing and aspiring.

Most recent holiday:
A fact-finding mission to Canada; cycling, horse riding, boat trips, seeing bears , sunrise hikes, and stunning scenery… unbelievably beautiful!

I never pack without including:
Passport, paperwork Earl Grey t-bags , wet wipes, hair straighteners , a hat or two, and adaptor plug!

Suitcase or backpack?
Always a suitcase, I am a neat freak and like everything to be ordered, folded, and put in its place. I pack for everyone, I let my husband pack himself, then repack his case.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Experiencing new places, cultures, and food. Food is the biggest draw for my children, as long as they are being fed, they are happy and they will try everything!

The worst?
Making sure everyone is happy!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Working as part of a team who embrace travel and everything it offers you. I lived overseas for 19 years, and when I came back to the UK no one was interested in where I had come from, now I’m not afraid to talk about it.

Suncream – and make up of course!

Suitcase or backpack?
Best of both worlds. I always use a soft suitcase with wheels. I can never find what I need quickly in a backpack – too many different compartments and zips.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Seeing them enjoy new experiences, getting out of their comfort zones and trying new foods. And just spending time together without the normal day-to-day distractions and commitments.

The worst?
 “Are we nearly there yet?” on long road trips. And trying to get them to sleep at night because they are over-excited and we have an early start the next day.

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Working with colleagues who love travel just as much as me, planning exciting holidays for families. And best of all the amazing feedback when they return – ready to book their next trip!

Most recent holidays:
My most recent trips have been to Sweden, the Isle of Mull (Scotland) to photograph otters, and Austria to get my fix of snowy mountains.

I never pack without including:
Chargers, power banks, and lots of spare batteries for my DSLR. I always buy a paperback book at the airport when I travel too, just in case my kindle runs out of battery. Now you see why I need the power banks!

Suitcase or backpack?
Soft sided rolling holdall – best of both worlds.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Seeing the look of amazement on their faces when they are exploring, and watching them learn new things as they go. It’s amazing how much they absorb, even from a young age.

And worst?
The sheer amount of wet wipes we seem to get through in a short time…

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Listening to the expertise of others in the office, talking about amazing places I haven’t yet been to, and chatting to our lovely clients about their next trip and sharing their excitement when we get to book something for them.

Most recent holidays:
My most recent holiday was to Montenegro and Albania. Exploring all the small historical towns and amazing scenery along the Adriatic coast was fantastic. All the charm of Croatia and Greece but at a fraction of the cost!

I never pack without including:
An eye mask and headphones! Always come in handy – especially on long flights.

Suitcase or backpack?
A backpack! No question about it …

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
I don’t have my own kids but travelling with my nephew, I appreciate his perspective on the world. Kids have a way of not taking experiences for granted and appreciating the small things.

And worst?
Early wake ups

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
I think how much thought goes into the holidays we put together. My colleagues are also fountains of knowledge. I get to learn about new countries and destinations all the time and no day is the same. In Thailand one minute and Costa Rica the next.

Most recent holiday:
Costa Rica!  This was for a recce trip with Stubborn Mule, but it felt like a holiday! The places we visited were absolutely amazing – so much beauty and culture, and the people are so warm and genuine.  I can’t wait to visit again!

I never pack without including:
I pretty much pack everything. I’m always afraid I will need something and end up not having it available.

Suitcase (see above 😊)

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
I have 2 kids (my daughter is 32 and my son is 24). When they were younger and we’d go someplace, I loved seeing their faces and hearing their laughter when they get to try new experiences.

The worst?
The whole ‘are we there yet?’ scenario, lol…

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
I work with the most friendly and dedicated group of people. They go above and beyond to make clients’ dream trips come to life. I also love to read the feedback from the families after they’ve taken these trips.

Most recent holiday:
Borneo! I took on the two-day trek to the summit of Mount Kinabalu, released turtles on remote islands and got to observe orangutans… it all felt straight out of a David Attenborough documentary. Next up: Norway & Nepal!

I never pack without including:
Noise-cancelling headphones, a world adapter & a hanging carabiner. Seriously, why don’t airport bathrooms have door hooks?

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
There’s no interest in selling a trip that we genuinely don’t think someone will enjoy, and there’s always someone in the office who has done the trip themselves. You get endless travel inspiration just by being around the team!

Most recent holiday:
I recently returned from an incredible adventure around the Philippines! We joined a local cookery class, climbed the iconic Chocolate Hills, spotted fireflies along the Loboc River, snorkelled alongside turtles and relaxed on the picture-perfect beaches of El Nido.

Next up, Brazil! I’ll be exploring the vibrant streets of Rio, taking a boat trip to the base of Iguazu Falls, searching for wildlife in the Pantanal, and relaxing on the white-sand beaches of Ilha Grande.

My portable charger and lots of aftersun!!

Although I don’t have kids yet, I can’t wait to share the experiences and adventures that come with travelling!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
There’s never a place in the world that someone in the office hasn’t been to! The team feels like a family, and I love hearing about everyone’s exciting experiences from all around the globe!

Most recent holiday:
Cambodia, with my husband, visiting temples, feeding elephants, swimming in waterfalls, relaxing on the beach and enjoying magnificent Asian cuisine. And before that, Jordan on a Stubborn Mule trip to experience why it’s a favourite with our customers. The last one with our children was a USA “planes, trains and automobiles” trip, including Boston, New York, Chicago, and New Orleans – a real adventure.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
There are so many. Spending quality time together, them being enthusiastic about the simple things that we can never get them to do at home like going on a walk or playing a game of cards, witnessing their excitement as they get to experience new things, all of us being able to reminisce about those holiday memories over the dinner table for many years after.

And worst?
Their energy levels never dip, but mine do!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
There are so many people here with a wealth of knowledge about the destinations we travel to, and I love listening to them and discovering places I had never previously considered visiting.

Most recent holidays:
Two weeks in Thailand spent sampling street food in Bangkok, crossing the Bridge over the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi, drifting through Khao Sok National Park on a longtail boat and enjoying a sunset cocktails in Koh Samui.

Next up, Morocco again and Egypt!

Everything! I’m that person who packs for all eventualities.

As I pack everything, I need a suitcase – one with four wheels, of course!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Hearing everyone’s travel stories in the office and their amazing knowledge of all our destinations. Plus all the wonderful feedback and photos of holidays that our clients send us.

Most recent holidays:
Tanzania with the family. We took a hot air balloon over the Serengeti at sunrise which was absolutely jaw dropping. The kids loved safari, we saw all the big five – and the ugly five! Cycling through Mto Wa Mbu was also a highlight, we met locals, haggled in the market and ate fantastic Tanzanian food. My next trip is Egypt with my lovely colleague Holly.

I never pack without including:
Some brightly coloured and comfortable shoes, plus a boatload of curiosity.

Suitcase or backpack?
My trusty Eastpak wheelie bag.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
Seeing their confidence and resilience bloom through new experiences and challenges.

And worst?
I couldn’t possibly say – my kids will read this!!!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Sharing and hearing travel stories with the team, as there’s such a wealth of knowledge and experience in the office. It’s a joy to spend time with people so passionate about what they do.

Most recent holidays:
A tour through Europe in our wee sports car (very light packing required). We started in France and headed to the Alsace region, moving onto Germany, staying in Bodensee, then a quick visit to Austria, and onto Italy, staying in Ortisei with a fabulous view of the Dolomites and then back to the South of France.

I never pack without including:
Trainers, swimsuit (I love swimming in the sea), and shorts. I always take a little backpack that I can cram with essentials for a day of exploring.

Suitcase or backpack?
Backpack/hold all. I try to pack light if I can, but it’s not always easy!

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
I love travelling with my kids; they are just fun to go on holiday with, and it’s amazing making new memories with them. It’s just fun! Especially as they are getting older and appreciate the travel and the new experiences.

And worst?
Probably the pre-holiday panic!! Leaving packing to the last minute and the boys thinking that one set of clothes and 2 sets of underwear will last 2 weeks!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
Working with a lovely team of people and hearing the delight from clients when they are getting excited about their upcoming trip!

Most recent holidays:
Turkey – it’s an easy pleaser, gorgeous food, great weather, and stunning arty alleys with hand-painted pots and mosaic lights.

I never pack without including:
Dual adapter & portable charger, these have saved me a lot of stress, and there is nothing worse than arriving with the wrong adapter! (I always have a little snack too, you just never know!)

Suitcase or backpack?
This depends, but I’d say I am a suitcase kind of girl!

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
A wealth of knowledge! It’s incredible to have in-depth conversations about so many destinations with the team – there isn’t a single place someone hasn’t experienced firsthand. I also love being part of the memory-making process; travel has the power to open minds and shape lives, and knowing we play a role in that is truly magical.

Most recent holidays:
I most recently did a cross-country road trip in Ireland with my Mum, Nan and younger brother. A trip to Italy with my Dad and my brother where I ate my body weight in calamari and last year, I went on a road trip (are you sensing a theme?) to the South of France and saw the lavender being harvested, swam in rivers and the beautiful Verdon Gorge – spending some wonderful quality time with my nearest and dearest (which is what holidays are all about for me!)

I never pack without including:
An extension lead – then you only need one adaptor plug! Oh, and headphones and a good book.

Suitcase or backpack?
Backpack… but a cabin-sized one!

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
My experience of kids abroad is from when I was a teacher! They say the funniest things and really open your eyes to things you’d never even notice – from buying Mexican wrestling masks, to trying food you’d never thought they’d go near, to seeing a new culture in a whole different light. They really add a sense of adventure to a trip.

And worst?
Trying to remind them to put their suncream on (or to put their phone away sometimes!)

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
I love working with the whole team – everyone is so kind and generous with their time and experience. I feel like every day I learn so much about the world just by coming into work! My travel bucket list grows every day.

A city break to Kraków in Poland

I never pack without including:

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
The memories created, from travelling a lot with my family as a child, we still sit around the dinner table and talk about all the fun we had years later!

And worst?
Not having kids (yet!), I’m still waiting to discover that for myself.

I love hearing everyone’s travel stories. It’s amazing getting to learn about different destinations from all my colleagues’ past experiences. It makes me never want to stop discovering the world!

Cambodia, the first as a solo parent and it didn’t disappoint, it was such a beautifully welcoming country and so rich in culture alongside epic activities.

I never pack without my pillow to ensure a good night’s sleep!

Suitcase – I try to pack light and fail every time.

What’s the best thing about travelling with kids?
When you book an activity with just them in mind, but you end up enjoying it just as much!

And worst?
“Are we nearly there yet?” I love a road trip, just watching the changes in scenery along the way… so I have learned now to make sure we have plenty of interesting stops just to break it up for my youngest.

What’s your favourite thing about Stubborn Mule?
It’s like being part of a family where we are all passionate about the same thing… Travel! I love listening to the sales team when they are sharing their in-depth and unique knowledge; it means a new destination seems to be added to my bucket list every week.

India, Costa Rica and Greece for work. Malta, and the south of France (again 😊) with the family and a lovely weekend in West Wittering!

Things the children forget to pack and millions of books loaded on the kindle.

The fact they still want to travel with us now they are older (helps that Mum’s paying!)

The wonder with which they can experience the most mundane things. Simply walking into a local grocery store and the greeting both they and the patrons give is amazing.
