Georgia

When to go to Georgia

Georgia features the same weather patterns as the rest of Europe, with cold winters and hot summers. The optimum school holidays for a visit are May and October half terms, and the summer holidays in July and August.

January

Cold and wintry, not the ideal time to visit. The mountain areas are inaccessible.

February

Cold and wintry, not the ideal time to visit. The mountain areas are inaccessible.

March

Although officially spring starts towards the end of March, it can remain quite cold and wet. Easter isn’t the ideal time to visit and the mountains may still be inaccessible.

April

April is a month of change and you can get some spring-like weather, but it’s usually still quite cold. This is not the ideal time to visit.

May

By May, and particularly the end of May (in time for the UK half term), the weather has usually turned, and you would hope to get some sunshine. The mountains around Stepantsminda are more accessible, although Tusheti and Svaneti continue to be difficult to visit until well into June. This is a reasonable time to visit.

June

The season starts in earnest in June and you would expect good weather (although the weather in Georgia is notoriously changeable, surrounded as it is by mountains). This is a good time for hiking (except in Tusheti, where the pass often remains closed). An excellent time to visit.

July

This is the optimum time to visit. The weather in Georgia is changeable, so you always need a rain-jacket, but you should expect lots of sunshine and warm weather.

August

This is the optimum time to visit. The weather in Georgia is changeable, so you always need a rain-jacket, but you should expect lots of sunshine and warm weather.

September

This is the optimum time to visit. The weather in Georgia is changeable, so you always need a rain-jacket, but you should expect lots of sunshine and warm weather.

October

Although summer is over, October is a wonderful time to visit as the trees are autumnal yet the mountains are accessible and there’s often good weather through to November. Therefore, October half term is a great time to visit.

November

Winter is fast approaching and it can be cold and wintry. Once October half term is finished, this is not the ideal time to visit.

December

Cold and wintry, not the ideal time to visit. The mountain areas are inaccessible.
