Georgia Highlights day-by-day itinerary

Day 1, Arrival Tbilisi
When you arrive in Tbilisi, you will be met at the airport by a Stubborn Mule Travel representative and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2, Tbilisi
Spend the morning exploring the capital with a guide. You will wander through the old terraced districts of the city, past narrow streets full of colourful houses and patterned balconies. Along the way, stop at the 13th-century Metekhi church, from where there are magnificent views of old Tbilisi.

Later, enjoy a cable car ride to experience the panoramic views of the whole town from the ancient Narikala fortress. It’s well worth exploring this district, full of stunning brick mansions and sulphur baths.

Day 3, Tbilisi
Today you will experience an epic day of eating! Explore the roots of the delicious Georgian cuisine and sample a range of dishes all around the city. Steamed dumplings (known as Khinkali), delicious melted cheese pastries, brightly coloured salads, freshly cooked flatbreads, vegetable dips… the list goes on. This mouth-watering succession of different dishes will be enjoyed in a number of local, charming cafes, traditional teahouses and food markets around the Old Town.

Day 4, Tbilisi – Sighnaghi – Tsinandali – Telavi
Start your day exploring the Kakheti region, known for its traditional winemaking and views of the snowy peaks of the Caucasus Mountains and the Alazani Valley. Your first stop is the picturesque town of Sighnaghi, followed by a home-cooked Georgian lunch with the locals. Afterwards, visit the historic Tsinandali estate of Duke Alexander Chavchavadze, a former gathering place for 19th-century poets and artists.

You will then head to a local wine cellar to discover the ancient Kvevri winemaking method. Finish your day in Telavi, where you will spend the night.

Day 5, Telavi – Alaverdi – Tianeti – Stepantsminda
Take a morning visit to the bustling Telavi market, brimming with colourful, freshly picked fruits, vegetables, local sweets, and spices. You will also explore the stunning Alaverdi Cathedral, a remarkable 11th-century gem.

Later, drive up the famous Georgian Military Highway. On the way, stop at the 17th-century Ananuri architectural complex, with two churches and a fortress overlooking the Zhinvali water reservoir. The carvings on the churches are one of the best samples of Georgian art. Continue on the scenic drive through the Caucasus Mountains to your hotel in Stepantsminda. The setting here is sublime, surrounded by forested hills against the backdrop of the snowy peaks of Mt Kazbek.

Day 6, Stepantsminda – Gergeti Church – Stepantsminda
Start your day with a visit to Gergeti Trinity church, the most popular tourist destination in Georgia. You will take a picturesque walk through valleys and woodland to the church, located at 2,170m. The views all around are superb, with green slopes covered with mountain flowers in spring.

Weather permitting, you may catch a glimpse of one of the highest glaciers in the Caucasus – Mt Kazbegi (5,054m).

After your hike, enjoy a traditional Georgian lunch with a local family and participate in a Khinkali dumplings masterclass. You will then visit an Art House where you will have an opportunity to see how Georgian felt is made and sample some herbal tea and home-made jams before returning to Stepantsminda for the night. On the way you will pass the Dariali Gorge and enjoy its dramatic beauty. There is the option to walk up to the Gergeti Waterfall. Located in the mountains, this beautiful valley is especially attractive for wildlife lovers.

Day 7, Stepantsminda – Truso Valley – Stepantsminda
A wonderful time hiking today as you head deep into the mountains to the Truso travertines. You will walk through ancient mountain villages and emerge in the Truso Valley. Here you will get a completely different perspective of Mount Kazbeg and its glaciers. The deeper you walk into the valley, the stronger you will feel the ‘wild Caucasus’ charm.  The path takes you along the mineral water coloured cliffs to the abandoned village of Ketrisi, with its beautiful watchtower. The views throughout are absolutely spectacular. (Hike time approx. 4hrs/6km)

Return to Stepantsminda for the night.

Day 8, Stepantsminda – Mtskheta – Uplistsikhe
In the morning, explore Mtskheta, the 3,000-year-old ancient capital and religious centre of Georgia. From here, continue to the impressive Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century), where the Robe of Christ is buried. Both Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

From here, continue to Gori, where you can visit the Stalin Museum before heading to Uplistsikhe.
