Highlights of Egypt day-by-day itinerary

Day 1, Cairo
Arrive in Cairo where you will be met by a Stubborn Mule representative and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2, Cairo
This morning head to the Pyramids of Giza, one of the ancient wonders of the world, and a true highlight of the tour. You will have plenty of time to explore the site, see the Sphinx and enter deep into the largest of the Pyramids to the burial chamber. Also enjoy a camel ride through the desert enjoying the stunning views.

In the afternoon, head to the magnificent Grand Egyptian Museum. Children will love exploring the museum as it houses many of the treasures of ancient Egypt that they may have learned about in school. Particularly popular with the kids are the treasures of Tutankhamun and his famous turquoise and gold death mask.

Day 3, Cairo – Aswan
After a relaxing morning, visit the Civilisation Museum to see the rather ghoulish but completely fascinating mummified remains of some of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs. From here head for the Citadel for a wonderful view over the city before venturing into the Khan El Khalili bazaar. This is one of the largest in the Middle East. Hone your haggling skills as you bargain for souvenirs!

In the evening you will board the overnight train south for Aswan. You will travel first class, in two person cabins with comfortable fold-down beds.

Day 4, Aswan
Arrive in Aswan, a beautiful laid-back town spread along the banks of the Nile. You will be met at the train station and transferred to the dock for your boat trip to visit the impressive ruins of Philae Temple, situated on a picturesque island. You will also see the Aswan High Dam.

Afterwards you will make your way to your hotel, where you will be able to check-in and relax.

In the evening join a local Nubian family for dinner in their home.

Day 5, Aswan
This morning there is the option to visit the temples of Abu Simbel, one of the most impressive temples of Ancient Egypt. This was moved, slab by slab, after the Aswan High Dam was built and the original site was flooded. You can either fly to the site or you can drive (which takes around 3 hours each way). Please let us know if you would like further details.

Later, board your felucca (a traditional Nile sailing boat) and spend the afternoon cruising around on the Nile accompanied by local Nubian sailors. You can try your hand at the tiller or just lie back, relax and watch the world go by! Moor up in a quiet spot for dinner, before returning to your hotel for the night.

Day 6, Aswan – Luxor
Bid Aswan goodbye and continue by road to Luxor. Along the way you can stop at the picturesque temple of Kom Ombo, perched on the banks of the Nile.

Enjoy a free afternoon in Luxor, discovering the bazaars or perhaps taking high tea at the Old Winter Palace.

Day 7, Luxor
It’s an early start this morning to avoid the heat of the day… Before dawn you will cross the Nile, driving through small villages and past fields of sugar cane to the Colossi of Memnon, from where you will be transported to the Valley of the Kings, where the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt were buried in intricately painted tombs.

Once at the Valley of the Kings you will have a tour around the site, taking in three different tombs. There is also the option to visit the tomb of Tutankhamun; having studied this in school, many children are keen to see the tomb but are a little surprised to see that it is tiny compared to the others that you visit….the mind boggles at how impressive the treasures of the other tombs must have been!

You will also visit the impressive Hatshepsut’s Temple, the Colossi of Memnon and Deir El Madina, the village where ancient workers lived and built their own tombs when working on those of the Pharaohs. There is quite a lot of sightseeing on this day but you can do things at your own pace, stopping for refreshment and relaxation as needed.

The afternoon is free for you to relax.

Day 8, Luxor
In the morning visit Karnak Temple, just outside Luxor. The temple itself is magnificent and very extensive; you can spend hours exploring the various sections of the temple, gazing up at the vast columns and intricate carvings.

The afternoon is free for you to relax by the pool.
