Where to stay with your family in Costa Rica
From simple rainforest lodges to picture-perfect beach resorts, Costa Rica has something for everyone. Head deep into the jungle for barefoot luxury at a remote eco-lodge complete with hammocks and a view of monkeys cavorting in the trees or take some time out for a few days relaxing on the coast.
Rooms typically have two double beds, so keep this in mind when speaking to us – would your children share a bed, or will you expand into two rooms? When preparing your Costa Rica itinerary, we will take this into account, as well as your budget, and will suggest a range of hotels tailored to your family’s needs.
Here are just a few of our favourite family-friendly places to stay in Costa Rica.
Lomas del Volcan, Arenal Volcano
A peaceful mountain lodge at Arenal’s base, ideal for families. Spacious bungalows offer volcano views, and kids love the upgraded pool and tasty food. With zip-lining, rafting, nature walks and hot springs nearby, it’s a super base for exploring La Fortuna, Stubborn Mule-style!
Rio Celeste Hideaway, Bijagua
Considering an upgrade? This is a luxurious rainforest lodge on the doorstep of Volcan Tenorio NP. Stay in a casita with private outdoor shower and jungle views. Kids love spotting coatis and frogs and exploring nature trails. Perhaps take a night walk to look for tapirs and go swimming in the stunning Rio Celeste. A wonderful base for exploring.
Capitan Suizo, Tamarindo
At the quiet end of the beach, this beachfront boutique hotel is much loved by Stubborn Mule families. Nestled in lush gardens, the bungalows are visited by monkeys and iguanas. Kids can enjoy the pool, surfing lessons and watching wildlife. Eat outside under the stars and stroll along the sandy beach – you won’t want to leave!
Pirate Cove, Drake Bay
This secluded eco-lodge on a mile-long beach is the gateway for visiting Corcovado NP. Based in bungalows surrounded by rainforest, families feel like they’ve stepped into Jurassic Park! Kids soon become expert spotters of monkeys, toucans and dolphins. Activities include guided Corcovado tours, walking trails and snorkelling at Caño Island.
Why book Costa Rica with Stubborn Mule?
We know that every family is different. That’s why we don’t squeeze everyone into the same one or two hotels. We ask you what is important to your family and then suggest the properties that we know you’ll love. If the view is paramount, we’ll include the perfect hill-top ecolodge with a magnificent panorama. If you have younger children and need everyone all in one room, we have a little black book of suitable properties. Whatever you need, our many years of arranging family holidays in Costa Rica mean that we will have the answer!
