Where to stay in Colombia

Sometimes there may not be the choice you will find in other locations – such as at Hato La Aurora or along the trail to the Lost City. Sometimes you will only be able to access your accommodation by a spine-tingling cable car ride or on horseback (!). We will always discuss whether the accommodation is suitable for your family first and then adapt the itinerary accordingly.

Below are some of our favourite places to stay in Colombia.

Coffee Zone

In the heart of the UNESCO Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, lie two very special places of abode, both with truly unique ways of arrival.  The first is Termas La Quinta which you can only access on horseback. After a scenic 30-minute ride, you will ride your (well-behaved) horse into the courtyard of this idyllic family home to a welcome drink followed by a dip in the naturally heated thermal pool.

Your room is replete with antiques and leads out onto a balcony offering wide-sweeping views of lush scenery and jaw-dropping waterfalls. Home-cooked food is served in the communal dining area, an honesty bar and decades of National Geographic magazines will keep parents happy whilst a hike to the active thermal area within the hacienda grounds (be careful where you step – geysers ahoy!) will fascinate older children. 

Alternatively head towards the lofty heights of Nido de Condor – the Condor’s Nest – by cable car (max 4 people!) for the ultimate in glamping luxury. Your exquisite tented accommodation offers open-air showers with a view, hand-held coffee grinders to make the best use of the local product, wood-burning stoves to take the nip out of the (high altitude) temperatures, and views over the steaming live volcanoes that dominate the nearby Los Nevados National Park. 

As a fully sustainable property, the hotel grows all its own produce and a top-class chef oversees high-quality cuisine in the restaurant overlooking an idyllic watering hole that attracts numerous exotic birds. Hire bikes (yes, right on top of the plateau!), take an avocado plantation tour, or join the on-site naturalist to hike to the nest of the pair of condors who reside on the cliffs below the camp. Breakfast with these majestic birds of prey is virtually guaranteed.

Murcura

If you are looking for a beach resort that does not offer nightclubs and entertainment, outdoor fitness classes around the pool, or noisy road traffic running past your hotel room, then we have found a little piece of paradise that will suit your family perfectly. The Punta Faro Hotel is located on the idyllic coral island of Murcura, a 2.5hr boat transfer from Cartagena. The ethos here is to leave stress and worry behind and disconnect from the world. Gaze out from thatched cabanas over white sandy beaches and turquoise sea.

Renowned for its coral reefs, there is superb diving and snorkelling to be found here.  Or stay above the water in kayaks, SUPs, and catamarans. Land-based pursuits can also be enjoyed – hire a bike and explore this tiny island, take a walk through the mangroves, or head to the tennis court. The hotel supports local sustainable projects and is also heavily involved in turtle conservation. This ‘service with soul’ makes it so much more than just a beach resort and the perfect way to bring your Colombia family holiday to a close.
