Montenegro

When to go to Montenegro

Montenegro has a typically Mediterranean climate – that is, hot, sunny summers and cool/cold winters. Spring (April and May) and autumn (October) can be good times to go to Montenegro if you’re mainly interested in hiking, kayaking and rafting. If you want to swim in lakes or the sea, they can be too cool. High summer can be very hot (generally, mid- to upper 30°Cs), but many activities are water-based, and for others, you can always cool off afterwards in the sea, lakes and hotel pools.

January

This is winter time, with cold weather and some rain – but also the chance of snow for those looking for low-key affordable ski resorts.

February

This is winter time, with cold weather and some rain – but also the chance of snow for those looking for low-key affordable ski resorts.

March

You may still be able to ski in Montenegro now, or conversely spring may start come into bloom, but it will probably still be too cold to make the most of many of Montenegro’s outdoors activities.

April

Springtime brings more sunshine, although there can still be rainfall too. This can be a good time for hiking, kayaking and rafting, as well as exploring old towns and ancient fortresses.

May

This is a lovely time to explore Montenegro: it will probably still be too cool for beach days and sea and lake swimming, but the mild weather is perfect for other activities including hiking and rafting.

June

June is a perfect time to visit Montenegro, with warm to hot weather and lot of sunshine, making it ideal for experiencing all activities.

July

This is high summer, with long sunny days perfect for experiencing all that Montenegro has to offer.

August

Like July, August is high summer, with long sunny days giving you plenty of scope to experience all the activities on offer in Montenegro.

September

Temperatures may start to fall now, but this is still a blissfully warm and sunny time to enjoy all of Montenegro’s outdoor activities.

October

Autumn can still be fun – warm and sunny, although with some rain to be expected. It may be getting too cool to swim but you can still enjoy many other activities.

November

Late autumn in Montenegro can be rainy and cold and isn’t the time to make the most of this country.

December

Winter is now here, with rain and cold temperatures unsuited to outdoor adventures.
