Where to stay in Guatemala
Although Guatemala’s tourist industry is not as developed as that of its neighbours Belize and Mexico, there’s still a great range of accommodation options here. If budget allows, indulge your historic side with a stay in a gorgeous converted convent in the heart of Antigua, the history palpable all around you. For those keeping an eye on costs, there are cheaper options, still with picturesque central courtyards spilling over with exuberantly coloured purple bougainvillea.

Casa Palopó, Lake Atitlan
The same is true throughout the country; those on a more generous budget will find exquisite heritage and boutique properties (Casa Palopó on Lake Atitlan is a favourite).

But there are always cheaper options (the Casa del Mundo being the perfect example of a slightly more modestly priced hotel that is still delightful).
If you are looking to round off your family holiday with some time on the beach, you can either pop over the border to Belize, to finish up in Placencia, or you could head to Guatemala’s Pacific coast. This is not well developed but its famous for surfing, so there are a handful of chic surf lodges, which will suit families (particularly with older children) who are looking for a more barefoot style.

You can opt to end your trip at a beach hotel on Belize’s Caribbean Coast
