Where to stay with your family in Botswana

Botswana has some of the most spectacular safari accommodation in the world, ranging from world-renowned luxury lodges to welcoming, attractively designed mid-range camps. Location is key; in the Okavango Delta, we will try to select camps with reliable year-round access to water, so that you don’t miss out on the iconic water-based safaris. Around Chobe National Park, we love the lodges on Chobe River so that you can watch huge herds of elephants from the riverbank right from your deck.

Many lodges have family suites, plunge pools and viewing platforms. Or to make your family trip extra special, you can also mix in unique overnight experiences, like stargazing underneath mosquito nets on the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, or a guided mobile tented safari deep in the wild.

Do note that many camps in Botswana have minimum age restrictions for some activities so we will always be mindful of this when selecting accommodation for your family.

Family-friendly hotels in Botswana

From delta camps to riverfront lodges, here are a few of our favourite places to stay in Botswana.

Chobe Bakwena Lodge - family-friendly hotels in Botswana

Chobe Bakwena Lodge, Chobe NP
Set on the quieter side of Chobe, Bakwena Lodge is a charming eco-friendly retreat surrounded by woodland. Family chalets are spacious and comfortable, and the lodge offers easy access to boat safaris and game drives in the national park. Expect warm hospitality, excellent guiding and plenty of opportunities to spot elephants and other wildlife.

Kanana Camp - family-friendly hotels in Botswana

Kanana Camp, Okavango Delta
One of our favourite camps in the Okavango Delta, Kanana combines a beautiful setting with exceptional wildlife viewing. Game drives, mokoro trips and a sleep-out deck under the stars make for a proper Delta adventure. Comfortable tents, including a spacious two-bedroom family tent, and a relaxed atmosphere create a truly memorable stay.

Sango Safari Camp - family-friendly hotels in Botswana

Sango Safari Camp, Okavango Delta
Located on the edge of the Okavango Delta, this charming camp offers a wonderfully authentic bush experience. Elevated tents overlook the floodplains, where wildlife can often be seen from camp. Days are spent on game drives, mokoro excursions and guided walks, while evenings are spent around the campfire sharing stories of the day’s adventures.

Mobile safaris
For families seeking a classic safari experience, we’d suggest a night or two on a mobile safari. Simple walk-in tents come with proper beds and en suite bucket showers, moved and set up by the crew ahead of your arrival. It’s an immersive way to experience Botswana, with campfire dinners and a real sense of adventure for older children.

Why book with Stubborn Mule?

This list highlights just a few of our favourite family-friendly camps but we have tried and tested dozens more. As part of our booking process we will get a sense for the kind of accommodation that you’ll love (whether that’s a comfortable lodge with lots of facilities, or a remote off-grid tented camp deep in the delta). We will always be mindful of whether there are suitable room configurations for your family, and that you won’t be adversely affected by minimum age restrictions for activities. Taking all this into account, we will then suggest places that we think will be perfect and which will give you the best possible family holiday.
