Where to stay with your family in Egypt
Egypt has a long history of welcoming visitors from around the world and the sights that you will see during your visit will be absolutely breath-taking. However, there is not the wide range of accommodation that you might expect in a country with such a well established tourist industry.
There are a handful of beautiful, luxurious hotels steeped in history, and another handful of smaller, boutique properties, but this is not really the norm. The vast majority of hotels in Egypt will be comfortable and functional, and almost all will feature a swimming pool, but they are perhaps not as charming as you may find elsewhere.
Our advice here is that you should think of your hotel as a comfortable place to lay your head in the evening. You need a good breakfast to set you up for the day, and a large pool where the kids can cool off in the afternoon, but the hotel isn’t a draw in itself, as might be the case in other Middle Eastern countries.

Steigenberger Pyramids, Cairo
Just a stone’s throw from the pyramids, Steigenberger Pyramids offers an excellent base for families. Kom el Dikka, Fayoum
Set on a peaceful olive farm near Lake Qarun, Kom El Dikka is a Stubborn Mule family favourite for those visiting the Valley of the Whales. Kids can ride horses, pick fruit and bake bread. Parents love the earthy architecture, organic food, and tranquil views. It’s a beautiful escape with plenty to do and plenty of space to roam.
Fort Arabesque, Red Sea
Fort Arabesque in Makadi Bay (near Hurghada) is ideal for families who want to end their trip with time by the Red Sea. With five pools (including a kids’ pool), a private beach, and snorkelling right offshore, water-loving Stubborn Mule adventurers have enjoyed staying here.
Old Cataract, Aswan
Perched above the Nile, the Old Cataract is one of Egypt’s most legendary hotels – Agatha Christie famously wrote here, and the grand colonial terrace and river views make it easy to see why. Families who appreciate a bit of glamour with their history will be especially smitten, and the sunsets over Elephantine Island are stunning.
Al Moudira, Luxor
One of Egypt’s few boutique hotels, Al Moudira is a peaceful hideaway on Luxor’s West Bank. Think lush courtyards, domed suites and a huge pool to cool off in after temple hopping. It’s a bit out of town, and you are not close to the action; if you want greater proximity to restaurants and shops, we would recommend the Luxor Hilton instead.

Family friendly room configurations can be tricky in Egypt. Most hotels don’t have suite style rooms, and although some have inter-connecting rooms, these tend to be in short supply and will never be guaranteed.
