Family holidays in Brazil
The delights of Brazil have become increasingly well known since the success of the recent Olympics. The colourful spectacle of the world-famous carnival attracts thousands of party-goers each February and the exotic beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana have featured in many hit songs over the decades. However there is much more to family holidays in Brazil than just the glamorous pleasures of Rio.
Beach-loving families are spoilt for choice from the well-known resort of Buzios to the pristine Atlantic coast and the hidden coves and islands near Paraty. Get the children trekking through the jungle to their overnight survival camp in the Amazon or cruise the waterways of the Pantanal wetlands in search of crocs, caiman and (big) cats. Abseil down to a subterranean lake or float the Prata River surrounded by giant shoals of fish in Bonito. Take the Serra Verde Express through Transatlantic rainforest to the colonial town of Morretes. Then ‘fall for the falls’ at Iguazu by boat, on foot or even helicopter.
Staying in historic family-friendly pousadas (inns) usually with pools, tropical gardens, hammocks and occasionally the resident macaw, you may even get the children feasting on the intriguing multi-cultural cuisine – piranha broth anyone? With the lively beat of the samba ever present, Brazil is sure to rock its way into the heart of any fun-loving family.
Why take the kids?
Brazil offers the adventurous family the complete holiday experience. An overnight flight sees you arrive in the iconic city of Rio where you can hike up Sugarloaf Mountain for views over the stunning bay and the giant Christ the Redeemer statue then crash on the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema with the locals. Along the Emerald Coast are gorgeous colonial towns, secret fjords, islands covered in rainforest and more beautiful beaches.
A short flight inland brings you to the wildlife haven that is the Pantanal wetlands where you can take boat trips or ride horses whilst spotting capybaras, anacondas and jaguar. Nearby Bonito is Brazil’s eco-tourism adventure centre, full of stunning caves and emerald rivers you can snorkel and float on. To the south, get drenched at the incredible Iguazu Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world, surrounded by lush rainforest and exotic wildlife.
Further afield there are exciting journeys along the Amazon from Manaus where you can explore the jungle whilst sleeping on a river cruise boat. Or head to the northeast coast and explore the intriguing delights of Salvador de Bahia with its colourful culture and tropical beaches.
Our favourite family-friendly activities
The children will be fascinated by everything that they can see around them on a family holiday in Brazil, whether this is watching the locals play football on Rio’s Ipanema beach, dabbling in a cookery course in the old town of Paraty or fishing for piranhas in the Pantanal (don’t worry, they’re actually vegetarian!). There is something for everyone on a Brazil family holiday and such a variety that children (and adults) of any age will be constantly entertained.
Some of our favourite activities on family holidays in Brazil include:
- Hiking up Sugarloaf Mountain for views over Corcovado (or taking the cable car of course)
- Learning to samba in the greatest party city on earth – Rio de Janeiro!
- Discovering secret fjords and beaches from the colonial town of Paraty on the Emerald Coast
- Spotting giant otters, hyacinth macaws and maybe even jaguar on a night safari in the Pantanal
- Getting up close – and soaked – in the spray of the magnificent Iguazu Falls from both Argentina and Brazil
- Snorkelling amidst the tropical fish in the crystal clear turquoise rivers of Bonito
- Trekking to our jungle survival camp and sleeping in hammocks deep in the Amazon jungle
- Enjoying the colourful Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador and tasting some traditional Bahian cuisine from your beach-front cabanas
