Swedish Lapland day-by-day itinerary
Day 1, Stockholm
When you arrive in Stockholm, you will make your own way to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore Sweden’s charming capital city. Take a walk through the cobbled streets of Gamla Stan (Old Town), where you can see the Royal Palace standing on the waterside. Pop into a cosy restaurant for some Swedish meatballs – a more scenic setting than IKEA!
Day 2, Stockholm – Kiruna – Northern Lights Tour
This morning, enjoy a guided walking tour of the Old Town, visiting the colourful buildings in the main square of Stortoget before heading back to the airport for your short flight north to Kiruna. Welcome to the Arctic Circle!
Kiruna is Sweden’s northernmost city, where you can experience both the Northern Lights and (in the summer), the Midnight Sun. It is the main centre of Swedish Lapland and the base for your exciting winter family holiday.
Kick off your adventure with a Northern Lights expedition. Your guides will use real-time predictions to source the best locations to spot the Aurora Borealis (sightings not guaranteed). You will be driven into the wilderness in search of this magical phenomenon and hopefully get that perfect shot of your family beneath a unique and mesmerising Northern Lights show.
Day 3, Dog Sledding – ICEHOTEL Visit
Fun with the huskies now! Heading out into Swedish Lapland as a passenger on a dog sled is truly a unique experience, with the wind in your face and the scraping of husky paws in the snow. You’ll be dashing through the winter wilderness and snow-covered terrain with the help of your driver (or upgrade to sled driving yourself). Maybe spot a moose or a herd of reindeer in this magical snowy landscape.
This afternoon, you will visit the world’s first and most iconic ice hotel. See the new interpretation of this year’s artists, including a visit to the ICEBAR, a frozen bar with slides for the kids to try!
Day 4, Snowmobile – Ice Fishing – Northern Lights Snowshoeing
A day packed with adventure. Set off on your snowmobile, travelling into snow-covered forests and over frozen lakes. You can choose to drive your own or share with another member of your family. No experience is required as your guide will help you along the way, as well as provide hot beverages when warming up is needed!
You’ll then set off to find the best spot to enjoy a spot of ice fishing. Whilst waiting for the fish to take the bait, you’ll relax among the scenery on some reindeer pelts. Hot drinks are provided to keep you nice and warm (along with a cosy fire), keeping spirits up during your wait for the perfect catch.
This evening, there is yet another exciting Northern Lights experience – this time on snowshoes! Join your guides for an evening walk by head torch through snow-covered forests. With the sound of snow crunching under your snowshoes, you’ll make your way to a chosen spot for viewing the Northern Lights. Away from the city lights, huddled around a crackling fire, you’ll listen to stories passed down about this natural wonder. A magical evening.

After your morning out and about in the wilderness, head back to your hotel this afternoon for some well-earned rest and relaxation at the Aurora Spa. Imagine soaking in the outdoor hot tub with the Northern Lights dancing above you… Day 6, Departure Thank you to Håkan Stenlund – SwedishLapland.com for the cabin in the snow photo.
Time for a bit of local culture. You’ll meet a traditional Sámi guide and travel to their winter camp. This indigenous group are known as the reindeer herders of the Arctic. Historically, living a nomadic lifestyle, nowadays they lead a more sedentary life. You’ll learn all about their seasons, traditions and customs whilst enjoying feeding the reindeer and eating lunch in their ‘lávuu’, a cosy tipi tent.
Bid farewell to the Arctic and transfer back to the airport, ready to head home. Alternatively, why not stop in Stockholm and spend further time in this beautiful city of islands? Surely a visit to the ABBA museum is a must…?
