Where to stay with your family in Sweden
Sweden’s accommodation spans quite a range, from fishermen’s cottages perched at the water’s edge to grand castle hotels and sharp, stylish city properties.
In the cities, hotels tend to be either sleek and contemporary or historic and quaint. Family rooms and connecting rooms do exist, but they’re not always easy to come by, so if you need more than two separate rooms, it’s well worth booking early. Do bear in mind that the older, more characterful properties often have smaller rooms, so if space and flexibility matter to you, the modern options generally work better for families.
Once you’re out of the city, there is considerably more choice. Family-friendly cottages are easy to find, and two- or three-bedroom properties are common. Many are self-catering, though you’ll also find options that include breakfast and dinner if you’d rather not cook after a day of exploring.
Hotels with swimming pools are relatively rare outside the cities, but not impossible, just let us know if this is a priority and we’ll do our best to factor it in, which will be easier if you’re booking well ahead.
Family-friendly hotels in Sweden
Here are just a few examples of places where our families love to stay in Sweden.

Thorskogs Slott
Dust off your suit of armour and get ready to take part in the many activities available at this beautiful Swedish castle, whose history dates back to 1249. Wander forest trails to work up an appetite for a three-course meal and an evening in the wood-fired hot tub. Swedish luxury at its best.

Liseberg Grand Curiosa Hotel
This hotel was built especially for kids, with its very own carousel and helter-skelter slide inside the lobby, and right next door to the Liseberg theme park. Located in Gothenburg, with wonderfully quirky décor, child-friendly menus and rooms that sleep up to six people (who’s in the top bunk?), this family stay is one of our top picks.

Oceanfront cottages
Seaside cottages blend Scandinavian simplicity with coastal views and beach R&R. Families love spending their days kayaking calm waters, getting sand between their toes and fishing for supper. In the evenings, settle by the BBQ to enjoy glowing sunset views. Feel instantly at home and enjoy peaceful, unhurried family time in a spectacular landscape.
Staying in Lapland
From all the gorgeous options to choose from in Lapland we found it impossible to pick a favourite! A magical remote glamping site with tipi cabins and glass igloos has been a roaring success with our families. Others have preferred being closer to amenities and restaurants. From forest lodges to spa hotels, we will match the stay to suit your family.
Why book with Stubborn Mule?
At Stubborn Mule, we know that every family is different. With such a wide range of options in Sweden, from cottages to castles and ice hotels to Scandi chic, it’s essential to select the right choice for your family. Yes, we have our favourites, and once we have discussed your holiday plans in detail, we’ll suggest a hand-picked selection that we think you’ll love.
Thank you to LW Images for the Oceanfront cottage image.
