Hi Lorna & Tracy. We had a fantastic trip in Sweden, and were very well looked after. The crab fishing in Grebbestad was a real highlight! Our kids loved that. It was a lovely varied trip with a decent amount of time in Stockholm and Gothenburg, which both had lots to offer a young family like ours, but we also loved our time in the outdoors. Beautiful scenery and lakes in Dalslands which made for lovely walks, and we really enjoyed the west coast around Grebbestad and trip to Koster Island being a big highlight and cycling around there. We’d also love to go back to Liseberg which was great fun with our two kids.

We had an amazing time thank you – our best holiday ever I think, J is ready to move to Sweden! Everything was just brilliant, it was so well organised and we loved it. The first hotel was fab. Really comfortable beds and absolutely incredible breakfast. Stockholm itself was lovely, we went to the Vasa Museum & the Nordic Life Museum, both were very good. The bike trip was also really well done with an excellent guide.

Then on to Grebbestad which was fabulous! We stopped at the recommended spots on the way and ate piles of prawns at Ekeloffs Bistro, which I highly recommend. The hosts were excellent – both the kayaking & crab fishing were fantastic. There is also a really good mini-golf just on the way out of town, which we ended up at twice because the kids loved it so much, and an amazing pizza barn recommended to us called Falkerod.

From there we went on to Dalslands, but we unfortunately missed the moose feeding! I had mis-read the time and by the time I realised my mistake it was too late to get there. However, we stopped at the Vitlyke site to see the rock carvings and ended up staying there for a good couple of hours – I’d really recommend that as a stop for families with older children, but it might be a bit of a schlep for younger ones, who would probably be more keen to see moose!

Then Kroppefjall… this was gorgeous, I could have easily done another night or two here and we may well go back – we loved the peace and quiet, it felt like being on a retreat. We’d ordered outdoor cooking bags for both nights, but there was a mistake and we’d only been booked for one, so we ate at the restaurant on the other night – this was a good mistake! The outdoor open-fire cooking was super fun and the food was delicious, but it was quite labour intensive and I was perfectly fine with not doing it two nights in a row 😅

We were very lucky to be in Gothenburg on one of only two days a year that the Natural History Museum allows people to go inside the blue whale that’s on display. I mean, truly it was only my husband who thought this was lucky, but the kids & I humoured him and we queued up for two hours to sit inside the whale for 5 minutes… a real highlight if you’re fascinated by blue whales I guess haha!! Other than that, we enjoyed the stay at the hotel, did a bit more mini golf and ate a lot of food!

It really was an epic trip, I’m sure it wont be our last Stubborn Mule holiday.

Sweden completely captured our hearts on our recent family trip, including our two teenagers. The people are so lovely, welcoming and genuinely friendly, and the outdoorsy mindset here is truly inspiring – everywhere you go, there’s such a sense of respect for nature (no litter anywhere!).

We loved the connection to the outdoors, from wild camping and canoeing through tranquil lakes to a 15-mile hike where we saw only six other people all day. Highlights also included our moose safari, just an hour outside central Stockholm, where you really feel like you’re in true wilderness, and of course exploring the city itself – the Vasa Museum is absolutely mind-blowing and Gamla Stan is picture-perfect pretty.

The cities are spotless and surprisingly affordable for eating out. We’d love to go back in the winter, imagining it will feel like a completely different world – almost Narnia-esque.

Travelled Winter 2025
Sweden in the winter was absolutely magical – after a short city break in Stockholm, we flew to a snow-covered Kiruna which was -17 degrees! We were then whisked off into the wilderness for a whole array of activities: dog sledding, ice fishing, snow-shoeing and outdoor campfires with warm soup, homemade bread and then, toasted marshmallows.

To be able to explore this vast, snowy landscape with the local Sami people felt like such a privilege. One moment we were stepping over the Arctic Circle, the next we were warming up by a toasty fire in a traditional log cabin!

We met reindeer, moose and sled dogs – and beyond lucky to have spotted the Northern Lights a few times! Not to mention, the food was incredible at all of the lodges we stayed at – all locally sourced and we were looked after so well by our hosts. One night we even stayed in a safari inspired tipi on the banks of a frozen lake!

So exciting to wake up to fresh moose prints in the snow knowing we were in such an untouched environment – I honestly can’t recommend Swedish Lapland enough. All the touches of a winter wonderland, wrapped in such a special, cosy atmosphere.
