Kenya pricing guide

A safari is one of the more expensive types of holiday that we arrange. Prices in Kenya do vary significantly depending on the season but are generally highest over Christmas and during the summer holidays in July and August. The exact cost will depend on how many of you there are, when you are travelling and whether the children will share a room with you or are old enough to be on their own.

Price guidelines

As a general guide, a two-week trip for a family of four to Kenya will usually start from around £16,000 excluding international flights. This is based on comfortable tented camps and lodges (all with en-suite facilities) but not luxury ones. Transport will primarily be by road, perhaps with one internal flight to the coast.

If you would like to add in Laikipia (in the north of Kenya), prices will start from around £20,000.

If you want to stay in more luxurious accommodation (perhaps in some of the private conservancies that are adjacent to the national parks) and fly between destinations, the price for a family of four will start from around £32,000 for a two week holiday, excluding international flights.

With any safari in Kenya, one decision that you need to make is the type of vehicle to be used. The less expensive option is to take a minivan with a pop-up roof. This is perfectly comfortable and because of the pop-up roof you get a good view of the animals when the vehicle has stopped. The (more expensive) alternative is to have a 4WD jeep, which has big picture windows and again a pop-up roof. This is much more spacious and offers better game viewing ‘on the move’ but it may be less comfortable for longer journeys. We can base our quote on whichever option suits your family.

Can you do Kenya on the cheap?

The simple answer is no! A safari is always going to be an expensive holiday and there is no way around this. If you are on a tight budget, there may be things that we can do to keep the costs down, but note that the cheaper lodges tend to be the larger ones and you therefore compromise somewhat on the experience. We will be able to provide tailored advice as to what will suit your family.

Generally, bear in mind that the expensive element of any trip to Kenya is always the safari, as once you get to the beach there are many relatively inexpensive beach resorts. Therefore if you need to keep the price of your holiday as low as possible, one way of doing this is to reduce the duration of the safari and increase the duration of the time on the beach.

International flights

All prices exclude international flights. These start from around £750 per person if you take an indirect flight, with a duration of usually around 12-13 hours.

You can fly directly from London to Nairobi in just over 8 hours. Prices start from £900 per person.

Flights are available for booking approximately 11 months in advance. If travelling during UK school holidays we suggest that you book your flights as far in advance as possible to get the best fares. Prices will rise considerably the closer to departure that you book.

Age suitability

There are no age limits on any of our holidays but do think about whether your children are old enough to really get the most out of a safari. Will the children enjoy a family safari in Kenya… read our overview page for our thoughts on this.
