Where to stay with your family in Kenya
Kenya has a wealth of good family-friendly accommodation, from small tented safari camps with just a handful of guests to larger lodges with swimming pools, family rooms and extensive facilities. Many families also choose to combine a safari with time on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast, where there are stylish boutique hotels and beach resorts suited to children of different ages.
For safaris, we can recommend everything from luxury lodges to comfortable camps, depending on what suits your family best. Lodges often have more facilities and activities, with spacious grounds where children can relax and let off steam after a day spent game viewing. We’d also suggest a few nights at a tented camp, where sleeping under canvas brings you closer to the sights and sounds of the bush. Family tents are typically spacious and comfortable, with proper beds, private en suite bathrooms and hot showers.
Families looking for a slower pace will enjoy staying at a traditional farmhouse in the mountain foothills, where children can participate in farm activities, horseback riding, and guided walks.
Family-friendly hotels in Kenya
Kenya’s landscape spans lush national parks and palm-fringed, white-sand coastlines, and our favourite places to stay are just as varied. Highlighted below are just a few of our favourites.
Olepangi Farm, Mount Kenya
Tucked in the lush foothills of Mt. Kenya, Olepangi Farm is a family haven of horses, hammocks, and highland adventures. Kids roam free, parents unwind, and everyone gathers for fireside stories and farm-fresh feasts. With warm hosts and wild beauty, Olepangi is a magical blend of comfort and culture, packed with a terrific variety of activities.
Nomad Beach Resort, Diani Beach
Ending your holiday here truly is barefoot bliss for families. Set on Diani’s dazzling white sands, it’s all about ocean swims, beach games, and fresh seafood under the stars. Kids can snorkel, spot monkeys, or just splash in the pool, while parents unwind in style. It’s laid-back luxury with a warm Kenyan welcome.
Secret Guesthouse, Lake Naivasha
One of our favourite places in Kenya is a friendly B&B we know near Lake Naivasha. While not a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination, this family lodge is wonderfully charming. There are extensive gardens, which are beautifully looked after and in season are packed with a profusion of flowers, attracting birds and butterflies.
Offbeat Mara, Mara North Conservancy
This secluded camp in Mara North Conservancy offers families a truly wild escape. With lions nearby, private tents with stunning views, and game drives until 10pm, it’s adventure at its best. Add bush walks, fishing, sundowners, and Maasai village visits – it’s an unforgettable safari packed with wildlife, wonder, and plenty of family-friendly thrills.
Why book Kenya with Stubborn Mule?
We’ve been arranging family safaris for years and know from experience that what suits each family in terms of accommodation will vary significantly. Some prefer a remote tented camp deep in the African bush, away from it all. Others will want a comfortable lodge, with serene views over the bush, but with the luxury of a swimming pool and a few more amenities.
A key part of our service is matching the right accommodation to your family. We know all of the camps inside out, and have spent years honing our choices to ensure we have the best possible options for families. We’ll discuss with you what you are looking for and then suggest the properties that we know you’ll love.
