Kenya

When to go to Kenya

Kenya is warm all year round (except in the mountains); the main consideration when planning your family holiday is therefore the amount of rain. March – May is the wet season when the country is at its greenest but some tracks and roads may be difficult to negotiate. This is also not the best time for wildlife viewing as the animals may be obscured by the long grass.

The summer months from June to September are a great time to visit, with little rain and therefore great wildlife viewing. October through to February is also a good time to visit. There may be some rain but it will not be excessive.

January

A good time to visit. It will be warm with occasional rain and this is an excellent time to view wildlife.

February

A good time to visit. It will be hot with occasional rain and this is an excellent time to view wildlife. You can look forward to hot sunny days on the coast.

March

March is warm and rainy – this is the start of the ‘long rains’. The early part of the month is still a good time to view wildlife. Any rain tends to fall mainly at night and is usually a short downpour. It is likely to be rainy on the coast.

April

This is not a great time to visit. It will be warm and rainy as this is the season of the ‘long rains’. This is also not the best time for viewing wildlife.

May

This is the wettest month of the year and is not a good time to visit. It will be warm and rainy although the rain tends to fall mainly at night and is usually a short heavy downpour. This is not the best time for viewing wildlife.

June

A great time to visit. It will be warm and becoming generally drier as the rains finish and the season tips into the dry months. Towards the end of the month conditions are ideal for wildlife viewing as waterholes and riverbanks teem with animals again.

July

An ideal time to visit. It will be warm and generally dry. Conditions are ideal for viewing wildlife. Wildebeest migration typically reaches the Masai Mara sometime in July.

August

An great time to visit. It will be warm and generally dry although there may be a short shower early morning or afternoon. There are ideal conditions for viewing wildlife. Book early as the wildebeest migration is normally in the Masai Mara at this time so the lodges and camps book up quite early.

September

An ideal time to visit. It will be warm and generally dry – perhaps a short shower early morning or afternoon. Ideal conditions for viewing wildlife. Book early as the wildebeest migration is normally in the Masai Mara at this time so the lodges and camps book up quite early.

October

A reasonable time to visit. It will be warm with occasional rain but the rain tends to fall mainly at night and is usually a short downpour. The wildebeest migration will typically be moving on to the Serengeti in Tanzania around October. With visitor numbers dropping, this can be a good time to go.

November

Warm with occasional rain – the ‘short rains’. The rain tends to fall mainly at night and is usually a short downpour. With visitor numbers dropping, this can be a good time to go.

December

Warm with some rain – the ‘short rains’. The rain tends to fall mainly at night and is usually a short downpour. The first part of the month can be a good time to go, as visitor numbers are low and the grass has not grown up too much.
