Places to visit in Australia
There’s no getting away from the fact that Australia is huge and you can’t possibly cover it all in one trip. Or at least, not if you are trying to stick to school holidays! Our team have travelled the length and breadth of the country and will be able to advise on all the best places to visit with your family, but here are some of our favourite highlights.
Great Barrier Reef
The world’s largest coral reef system, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches over 2,300 kilometres. Snorkel and explore vibrant coral reefs and encounter an array of marine life in crystal-clear waters.
Daintree Rainforest
North of Cairns, the world’s oldest tropical rainforest is home to incredible biodiversity, with ancient plants and unique wildlife. Discover this lush ecosystem on canopy walks and river cruises.
Cairns (Gimuy)
A perfect gateway to both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, Cairns is ideal for families who love tropical adventures. Waterfalls, riverboat tours, and wildlife spotting fuel the kids’ curiosity.
Kakadu National Park
Spanning 20,000 square kilometres, this UNESCO-listed park offers wetlands, waterfalls, and ancient rock art sites. It’s a haven for wildlife lovers, with saltwater crocodiles and abundant bird species. This is where you need to come for that archetypal ‘Crocodile Dundee’ experience.
Uluru (Ayers Rock)
A massive sandstone monolith in the Red Centre, Uluru is one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks. Witness its changing colours at sunrise and sunset while learning about Indigenous culture.
The Great Ocean Road
This breathtaking coastal drive in Victoria showcases towering cliffs, the famous Twelve Apostles rock formations, and picturesque beaches, making it a must-see for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Sydney
Australia’s most famous city and home to the twin iconic landmarks of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Ranged around a harbour, with endless coves tucked in one behind the other, this is a city based on water and there is never a beach far away.
Kangaroo Island
This wildlife sanctuary is known for its rugged coastline and thriving native animals like kangaroos, koalas and sea lions. Families can enjoy close encounters with wildlife while exploring pristine beaches and bushland.
The Kimberley
A remote wilderness in northwest Australia, the Kimberley is famed for its dramatic gorges, ancient rock formations, and stunning waterfalls. Experience Indigenous culture and explore its rugged beauty by boat or four-wheel drive.
Australia’s top sights combine adventure, nature, and cultural richness, offering families unforgettable experiences in the land down under.
Melbourne
Known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, Melbourne is home to attractions like Scienceworks, the National Gallery of Victoria and lots more. Families can also take scenic drives along the Great Ocean Road, stopping to admire jaw-dropping landmarks like the Twelve Apostles.
Tasmania
Fringed by gloriously white sandy beaches, Tasmania’s rugged hills are home to a beguiling mixture of rainforest and fertile farmland. The weather is less cooperative here than in much of Australia, but it’s a wonderful place for a family adventure with loads of activities, adventure and a thriving food scene in the capital, Hobart.
Adelaide
The great attraction of Australia’s southern city is the proximity of mountain and beach from the very centre of the city. It doesn’t take long to get wherever you want, so you can be swimming in the sea in the morning, taking lunch at one of the fantastic city restaurants and then hiking in the hills by mid-afternoon.
Perth
Perth is Australia’s sunniest city and this alone is a reason for many to visit! It has a fascinating history and gorgeous beaches, and the landscape to the north and south is stunning. Note that this is a long way away from much of the rest of Australia; it takes four hours to fly from here to Sydney.
