Where to stay in Madagascar
Madagascar generally has a limited infrastructure but there are some excellent hotels and lodges in certain locations.
For example, in Andasibe there is a stunning relatively new hotel set in the mountains with incredible views over the surrounding rainforest and a superb pool. Rooms are gorgeous, with great connecting family options, providing a luxurious base from which to explore the national park.
Further south in Isalo National Park, there are plenty of options with both a safari-style lodge (with comfortable safari tents and wonderful views over the escarpment), as well as more traditional hotels with wonderful pools and pretty gardens.
In Nosy Be, Ile St Marie, and the islands of the north such as Nosy Koma, there are world-class beach hotels, offering uber-luxury as well as more simple but charming properties with white sandy beaches and a profusion of brightly coloured bougainvillea trees.
Elsewhere, however, there are far fewer options! In such locations, we will suggest the best available hotel. We have visited them all so as to be able to suggest the one most suitable for your family, but you will at times need to be prepared for some accommodation snags – temperamental hot water, poorly locking windows, limited meal options and so on.
If this fills you with horror, please let us know and we will limit your itinerary to those places where we know that there is a very high standard of accommodation. This will mean that some areas are off limits, but we’d prefer this than to over-promise and under-deliver!
