When to go to Japan
The climate in Japan is relatively straightforward. Spring and autumn are a beautiful time to visit, with the cherry blossom out in spring, and the leaves turning red in autumn. These are the peak tourist seasons and rooms can be booked up a long way in advance. Summer will be quite hot and humid but many of our travellers do visit during this time. Winter is cold, although usually dry and sunny.
January
Dry and sunny. A good time to visit if you don’t mind temperatures around the 5-10 degrees mark.
February
Dry and sunny. A good time to visit if you don’t mind temperatures around the 5-10 degrees mark.
March
By the end of March it is usually quite a lot warmer and the cherry blossom will start to emerge. Easter is a great (and popular) time to visit.
April
A lovely time to visit, with the cherry blossom in full bloom. It will be busy at this time.
May
A lovely time to visit. It will be pleasantly warm and fairly dry. Avoid the first week of May which is ‘Golden Week’, a very busy national holiday.
June
It will be hot and humid, with some rainfall. The country will look very green and picturesque.
July
Rainfall decreases as the month progresses and this is a good time to visit, although it will be hot and humid.
August
It will be hot and humid but this is a good time to visit if you are prepared for this.
September
It may still be quite hot and humid but the temperatures become very pleasant as the month progresses, with lots of clear skies and sunshine.
October
This is a beautiful time to visit, with the leaves turning red and gold across the country, and the heat of the summer now receded.
November
The weather will usually be cool and mild, with plenty of blue skies. A good time to visit.
December
It will be cold by December (with temperatures hovering around 5-10 degrees). The weather is usually fine and dry, with plenty of sunshine, so this is a good time to visit if you don’t mind the lower temperatures.
